The first climate change prophet?

 

Like modern climate activists, Noah believed a great ecological disaster was coming because of humanity's actions Gen 6. While we might see pollution as the physical/direct cause, we might do well to consider that God brought the flood because of the violence (v13) or cruelty inflicted by and on the entire world. Are we unconcerned with violence to the world, like the Noah's contemporaries?

Who can you pray with?

 

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, there was an community as well as personal aspect (Luke 11). While Christians can pray alone and have a personal relationship with Christ, we should remember that Jesus also taught us to spend time being vulnerable with one another in the act of prayer. Who do you trust enough to spend time praying with?

Pray Awesome!

 When Jesus taught His disciples to pray (Luke 11), the emphasis seemed to be on God's greatness. Even in asking for daily bread, the emphasis wasn't on the need but on the great God who would provide. Do your prayers make much of God, or do you find yourself reading God your opinions as a wish list?

The Prayer Circle

 

While we often consider prayer to be an intensely personal practice, we should remember that when Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, He taught a communal prayer (Luke 11).  By using the words "our" and "us" Jesus defined the model prayer as that a community would pray together. Are your prayers inclusive of others' needs? Do you find that praying with others brings you closer together or does it divide you?

Held back by fear

 Sometimes we see a need and want to help, but fear prevents us from providing assistance. When Elijah's life was threatened, he hid and began to feel that he was the only person who still worshipped God (1 Kings 19). God's ministry to Elijah motivated the prophet to return to his service to God. How can God use you to encourage others who are too fearful to provide help to others?

Barnabas the encourager

 

Barnabas demonstrated true Christian care by continuously encouraging the early church. In Acts 4, he provides funds for his fellow Christians who are suffering financial hardship. Barnabas also endorsed a former political terrorist (Paul) in Acts 9, and advocated for the reinstatement of a failed missionary (John Mark) in Acts 15. In what ways are you encouraging the church?  

Exposed to the culture

As Christians, we reject the 'world' described as the lust of the flesh, lust of eyes and pride of life (1 Jn 2:16). Sometimes we also reject the criticism and views of others by calling it 'worldly.' Rather than separating from the culture of his day, Paul used it to gain insight and to preach Christ (Acts 17). Have you ever dismissed someone's viewpoint because you believed you were too good to hear it?

The courage of faith

 Ananias demonstrated great faith and courage by ministering to Saul, the persecutor of the Church (Acts 9). Although Saul was certainly a threat to any follower of Christ, Ananias followed God's command to find Saul and teach him about the way of Christ. Saul was healed of his physical and spiritual blindness and became one of the most important figures of the New Testament.

My Damascus Road Experience

 

Many Christians look for a special sign from God to provide assurance of God's love and salvation. While some Christians, like the apostle Paul, did receive this kind of sign (Acts 9), most do not. We are often asked to simply trust in the work Christ has done (Eph 2) and expect a change of heart (James 2). Do you spend more time trying to be saved, than living as if you are saved? 

Embrace the open tomb

 

The cross has long been the symbol of Christianity, but the empty tomb might be more appropriate. The empty tomb reminds us that Christ shares His victory over death with us (I Cor 15). While we might not need to abandon the importance of the cross, where Christ took our punishment for sin, we should also embrace the message of life that over death represented by the empty tomb.

Running toward the tomb

 When Mary brought news of Jesus' tomb being opened, two of the disciples ran to investigate (Jn 20).  They didn't seem to have a full understanding of what was happening but rushed to find out. How eager are we to discover God's plans? Do we rush to learn more about the great God who created us, or do hang back and let others report their findings?

Where NOT to bring your problems

 When Jesus found a blind man, the religious leaders immediately asked whose sin had caused the man to be blind (Jn9). Jesus answered that sin did not cause the blindness, but the blindness was necessary as a way for Jesus to demonstrate his divinity. When you see someone suffering, do you blame them for some shortcoming, or do you see the miracles God is working through you to help ease the suffering?

Pass the water?

 

Jesus declared that he would give "living water" to anyone who asked for it (Jn 7). The metaphor of refreshment and nourishment seems foreign to modern Christianity which seems more interested in punishing and judging. Are you offering to bring people to the living water, or are you passing judgement instead? 

Here to condemn you

 

One of the most attractive and amazing themes of the Bible is that the perfectly holy God who created us came to earth to save us instead of to condemn us (John 3). Being a Christian means personally demonstrating this kind of love and care to the world. Are you busy condemning the world, or are you bringing the good news of God's love and redemption?  

Nicodemus seems reluctant

 

The Jewish teacher, Nicodemus, seemed to reject Christ's teaching on the need for a second birth (John 3). The quick dismissal of an obvious metaphor might lead us to believe that Nicodemus wasn't really open to new ideas like those Christ was presenting. Do you find some of Christ's hard to accept?

When change is common

Nicodemas, a religious teacher, seemed confused by Jesus's teachings (John 3). It seemed like Nicodemas was reluctant to accept the radical teachings of Christ and had trouble understanding how to interpret and apply these teachings to his own life. What aspects of Christ's teachings do you have trouble accepting and applying?

Rebuild this temple

Christ told a group of temple officials that He would rebuild the temple that they would knock down, but the temple He was referring to was His own body  (John 2). This statement marked a huge change in how we consider access to God. Christ, as our sacrifice, is now our advocate and the person who provides us an audience with God. How do you approach God? Are you able to find a sacred space in the love of Christ?

Angry Christians

It might be tempting to use Christ's cleansing of the temple (John 2) as an excuse to demonstrate anger inappropriately. While Christ did display anger at times, it was always directed toward those who were taking advantage of others and anger was not Christ's defining characteristic. Are you considered an "angry person? Does your display of "righteous indignation" seem consistent with the person of Christ?

 

Look at me?

Christians often refer to themselves as "witnesses" of Christ. Like John the Baptist (John 1), we are not meant to call attention to ourselves, or assert our rights and privilege. We are called to "bear witness," or tell about the great things Jesus has done for us. In what ways are you bearing witness of what Jesus has done?

 

Heaven Must Sing

 

Although hidden to the kings and rulers, the birth of Christ could not be silent. A host of angels called out to the lower class shepherds to bear witness of this most significant event (Luke 2). In what ways do you find it impossible to keep quiet? Is it when you feel slighted or when you are filled with God's love and marvel at how wonderful He is?
